Baby Boy's 1st Birthday Cake Smash Photos
My first introduction to this birthday boy's family was for his big sister's first birthday session a couple years ago. Check out this blog post from last year when they were back in the studio again for this little guy's newborn portraits and his big sister's second birthday photos. They're both June babies, which makes it especially fun to double the celebration each time I get to photograph them. This year it was all about baby boy's first birthday cake smash and big sister's third birthday coming up! Along with sibling photos and individual portraits, this session was absolutely bursting with cuteness.

First birthday cake smash photoshoots are always some of my most popular sessions. They're equal parts celebration and adorable chaos. Whether parents are looking for a simple and timeless setup or something that ties into a birthday party theme, I have a variety of cake stands, outfits, headbands, crowns, banners, and other studio accessories on hand (check out my Baby Studio Catalog to see everything I have available). Families are always welcome to bring special items of their own as well.
For little ones who aren't quite sure what to think about the cake, a few favorite snacks hidden on top can work wonders. I generally recommend lighter-colored frosting and cakes for the best photos and easiest cleanup, and many families choose a simple 6-inch cake from a local bakery or grocery store. Of course, cake isn't the only option—I've photographed birthday celebrations with donuts, pancakes, cookies, fruit, and other fun treats too.
Many babies finish their session with a fun splash in a baby tub. It's a great way to clean up after all the frosting and end the session with even more smiles.
