Preemie Newborn Photography in Menifee, California

Welcoming a premature baby is often unexpected, and I’m always honored to help capture these special newborns whenever they’re ready. Preemie newborn photography is a gentle way to preserve just how small, new, and precious your baby was in those earliest weeks. These sessions focus on documenting fleeting details—tiny fingers, curled-up poses, and peaceful sleepy expressions—while honoring your baby’s unique start to life.

What Is a Preemie?

A preemie (premature baby) is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy and may also be called a preterm infant.

Premature babies are generally grouped as:

  • Late preterm: 34–36 weeks
  • Moderately preterm: 32–34 weeks
  • Very preterm: under 32 weeks
  • Extremely preterm: under 28 weeks

Because they arrive early, some babies spend time in the NICU or need extra support before coming home.

Why Preemie Photography Matters

These early sessions preserve details that change quickly, including:

  • Tiny hands and delicate features
  • Sleepy stretches and curled-up poses
  • Quiet bonding moments with parents and/or siblings

For many families, especially those with NICU experiences, these images become powerful reminders of how small your baby once was—and how strong they already are.

Timing Your Session

Preemie sessions are often scheduled a little differently than traditional newborn photography. Instead of only using birth age, photographers rely on adjusted age to better reflect a baby’s development.

I recommend scheduling your session while your baby’s adjusted age is under 4 weeks, whenever possible. This helps ensure we can still capture those classic sleepy newborn poses while allowing flexibility for NICU stays or early arrivals.

What to Expect in the Studio

Sessions are always baby-led and designed for comfort.

You can expect:

  • A warm, calm studio environment
  • Plenty of time for feeding and soothing
  • Gentle posing based on baby’s needs
  • Simple, neutral styling that keeps the focus on your baby

What Is Adjusted Age?

Adjusted age (or corrected age) is a way of measuring a premature baby’s development based on their original due date rather than birth date. To calculate this, you subtract how many weeks early your baby was born from their current age. For example, a baby was born 8 weeks early and is now 10 weeks old. 10 weeks is their actual age, but 2 weeks is their adjusted age.

Why Adjusted Age Matters

Adjusted age helps parents and professionals better understand:

  • Sleep patterns and behavior
  • Growth expectations
  • Developmental milestones
  • Newborn-like stages after birth

It’s especially important in photography because many preemies maintain that sleepy, curled-up newborn look longer than full-term babies, and thus don't need to be rushed in for newborn photos until they are ready.
